Solange covers the Summer 2013 issue of Brooklyn Magazine where she talks about her life, family and career. Some excerpts below:

On her decision to move to New York for her son’s sake: “We were living in LA and I was writing and recording this album literally between the hours of 9am and 3pm every day because that was the time that Julez was in school. We were completely isolated, we didn’t have any family or long-term friends there, and we didn’t have that support system built in there that we have in New York. We really wanted Julez to have the experience that we had growing up — being able to drop in on his aunt’s house and being able to hang out with Grandma and see our friends and have that experience of actually having a soccer game and having family show up.”

Managing being a single, working mother: “Is definitely a balancing act, and it is not at all easy. I do the best I can, which involves a lot of saying no to things, actually, and a lot of really organized scheduling and a lot of help, to be honest. That was one of our major incentives to moving here. We were living in LA and I was writing and recording this album literally between the hours of 9am and 3pm every day because that was the time that Julez was in school. We were completely isolated, we didn’t have any family or long-term friends there, and we didn’t have that support system built in there that we have in New York.”

Patra-Braids.

My new hair (well, about 2 weeks old)

Inspired by the two beauts, Solange Knowles and Patra (Reggae artist from the 90’s) who was most likely the inspiration behind Solange trying these braids out…

Won’t lie, I’m already a little tired of them, but I’m enjoying them.

Solange turns 25

Solange Knowles celebrated her 25th birthday in Las Vegas, complete in Alexander Wang’s drape detail dress. I love the high ponytail and the bright lip colour, but then again I (generally) love Solange.

I love that she’s not known as “just Beyonce’s sister” anymore. From Singer, Song-writer, DJ, she can now add Rimmel London, a major cosmetic house to her list of wins. She’s taking it nice and easy in building herself a solid name. Nice one, busy lady.

Juelz for Japan

“Julez for Japan” was inspired by the recent tragic earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. Daniel Julez J. Smith, Solange’s 6 year old son was saddened by the devastating footage he witnessed of the catastrophe and after a series of questions and conversations with mommy-deary, he decided he wanted to contribute in some way. Very sweet of him, don’t you think. This was done using a scan of his watercolor interpretation of the Japanese flag – you can see him at work above.

Hair-inspired.

So inspired, I’m thinking of getting these Solange braids, I hope they work with me / on me… wanna take a break from my usual look. It’s just hair I know, but me and my stubborn self are taking too friggin long deciding if I should get
these or not.

I don’t want to look grungy, scruffy and unkept, ya know… Totally understandable…

So, yup… I do believe I’m going ahead.  Flip, why exactly am I doubting that they’ll look good on me before I’ve even tried them?! Besides, braids suit every black girl. Right?

Solange for FashizBlack

Came across this online mag, you know, doing my regular trotting around these parts. FashizBlack profiled Solange Knowles who I am an avid lover of, and she looks stunning in this African inspired shoot.

some insight into her style evolution

How’s this head-wrap?! Love it.

This was for their September/October 2010 issue.
