SA’s Township Barbershops & Salons

In his new book, South African Township Barbershops & Salons, Simon Weller explored these social hubs that make up a part of South Africa’s township economic activity. Of the many observations made, some were that they go beyond just being places to maintain your hair, but also serve as key
places that keep the community together through helping your neighbour put food  on the table (first of all) but also socializing and sharing information (gossiping!).

Interviews were conducted with store-owners, customers and sign makers – should be interesting to find out what they had to say.

Book available from Mark Batty and Amazon.
